Aim Error and Face Error Leave the Same Miss

The ball goes right. That fact is compatible with two entirely different causes, and treating the wrong one is how golfers spend a winter getting worse.

A golfer sets up to a putt believing they are aimed at the centre of the cup. In fact the face is pointing an inch and a half right of it. They make a technically excellent stroke, deliver the face exactly where it was at address, and miss on the right.

A second golfer sets up perfectly square. Their stroke opens the face by a degree and a half on the way through. They miss on the right by the same amount.

Both walk off the green having watched the identical ball trace. Both will describe the same miss to anybody who asks. And the correct response to their situations could not be more different: the first needs the club's alignment or their setup addressed, the second needs the head, grip or length changed so the face stops turning. Give either golfer the other one's fix and things get worse.

The Separation Test

This takes four minutes and needs a helper, a chalk line or alignment stick, and somewhere flat.

  1. Set a straight line on the ground pointing at a target eight feet away. Do not let the golfer see you place it precisely; casual placement is fine.
  2. The golfer sets up to a ball on that line as they normally would, aiming at the target, and then freezes and steps away without moving the putter.
  3. Lay a straight edge flat against the face and read where it points relative to the target line. That reading is aim error, and it is entirely independent of anything the stroke does.
  4. Repeat five times with the golfer walking away and returning between each, because the first reading is always the least representative.
  5. Now have them putt ten balls and record where the ball starts relative to the line. The difference between the average start direction and the average aim reading is the contribution from delivery.

Step four matters more than it looks. Aim error is remarkably repeatable within a single setup and considerably less repeatable across five of them, and the spread across setups is itself a useful number.

What Each Result Means

Large aim error, small delivery error. The most common finding, and the easiest to fix. Sight lines on the putter head are frequently the cause — a golfer's eyes are not directly over the ball, and a long alignment line seen from slightly inside points somewhere other than where it appears to. Changing head style or moving the eyes with a length change often resolves it entirely.

Small aim error, large delivery error. A genuine equipment or stroke question. This is where hang angle, head inertia and grip diameter earn their place, because the face is moving during the stroke and hardware can slow that movement down.

Both large, in opposite directions. More common than you would expect, and it explains golfers who putt acceptably despite everything looking wrong. The body has learnt to cancel one error with the other. Fixing only one of them will make this golfer immediately worse, which is why we measure both before we change anything at all.

Both small. The putter is fine and so is the stroke. If putts are still being missed, the problem is speed or green reading, and neither of those is something we can sell you a fix for. We say so and hand the sheet over.

Why This Generalises Beyond the Putter

The same confusion runs through the whole bag. A tee shot that starts right is compatible with an open face, a square face aimed at the wrong thing, and a body aligned somewhere neither of you has checked. The launch monitor reports where the ball went, and it takes a separate measurement to attribute the cause.

It is the single most common reason golfers arrive here having "tried everything". They have tried several fixes, all of them plausible, none of them aimed at the actual mechanism, because nobody separated the inputs before prescribing.

Our whole session structure exists to force that separation. Baseline first, one variable at a time, and no changes until the read is on paper. It is slower than the alternative and it is the only version of this we know how to defend.
