What Actually Happens for Ninety Minutes
No mystery, no back room. Here is the sequence, including the parts where nothing exciting occurs.
Measure, Change One Thing, Measure Again
That is the entire method, repeated as many times as the clock allows. Everything that follows on this page is an elaboration of those nine words.
The reason it takes ninety minutes rather than twenty is that a single change has to be tested against enough swings to mean something. Six shots will confirm any theory you like. Twenty will not, which is why we insist on twenty.
The reason it works is that when you leave, every line on your sheet is traceable to a specific before-and-after comparison you personally watched happen.
Where the Ninety Minutes Go
| Warm-up and conversation | 10 min |
| Baseline capture | 20 min |
| Variable testing | 35 min |
| Cold confirmation | 15 min |
| Writing the ticket | 10 min |
Longer categories simply widen the testing block. The first and last stages stay fixed.
The Five Blocks in Order
-
Warm-Up and the Conversation Nobody Skips
You hit balls until you feel normal. While that happens we ask about your typical miss, the courses you play, how often you play them, and what made you book. This is not small talk — a golfer who plays twice a week on overseeded fairways gets fitted differently to one who plays once a month on dormant turf.
-
Baseline Capture With Your Own Equipment
Twenty logged swings with what you brought. We record face angle at impact, face to path, closure rate, strike location, and start-line spread. No coaching, no equipment changes, no commentary. If we talk during this block, we have contaminated the sample.
-
Single-Variable Testing
Now we change exactly one thing and repeat. Usually the first variable is lie or length, because those are cheap to test and often decisive. Shaft and head changes follow only if the geometry alone does not close the gap. Each round of testing gets its own block of swings and its own row on the sheet.
-
Cold Confirmation
The best-looking spec gets tested again without a warm-up, with a target called out before each shot and no repeats. Plenty of promising combinations fall apart here, which is exactly what this block is for. A spec that only performs in rhythm is a spec that will disappoint you in April.
-
The Written Build Ticket
Final numbers go on paper: head, shaft, tip trim, playing length, lie, loft, swingweight, grip model and tape build-up. Alongside them sit the baseline figures, so the sheet argues its own case. Build with us or take it elsewhere — it is your document either way.
Where This Method Has Limits
An Unstable Swing Gives Unstable Data
If your face angle varies by six degrees swing to swing, no build will hold that together. We will show you the spread and tell you that a lesson buys more than a shaft does. It is a conversation we have most weeks.
Indoor Numbers Need a Field Check
Bay conditions are consistent but they are not the desert in July. We tell you which figures translate directly and which ones to verify on the course before you commit to a full set build.
Sometimes the Answer Is No Change
Roughly one session in six ends with us confirming the equipment is already correct. That is a real result and we charge the same for it, because the measuring is the service.
The Part Most Shops Leave Out
If we build the clubs, they get assembled on our bench and checked twice: once when the epoxy cures and once after the first week of play. Bring them back and we verify loft, lie and swingweight have not shifted. There is no charge for that check.
If you take the sheet elsewhere, everything on it is written in standard notation any competent builder will recognise. We are not going to hide specifications to force a build.
What Arrives in Your Inbox
- A scan of the written build ticket
- Baseline and final face-angle figures side by side
- The strike map from both capture blocks
- Any bench work we recommend on your existing clubs
- A note on when the specs are worth re-checking
Ninety Minutes Is Usually Enough
Tell us the category and the miss. We will confirm the length of session that suits it.
