Every iron session opens on the bench rather than the mat. Each head goes onto the loft and lie machine and gets read against what the manufacturer stamped on it. The results are written down in front of you, unedited, including the clubs that are still perfect.
Sets bought in matched boxes rarely stay matched. Cast heads shift a little from ground contact and a lot from a firm strike on a hidden rock, which the Sonoran Desert supplies generously. Forged heads move even more readily, which is a feature when you want to bend them and a nuisance when you did not ask for the bend.

Dynamic Lie, Read From the Ground
Sole tape goes on, you hit off a lie board, and the mark tells us where the club is really arriving. A static fitting cart reading taken with you standing still is a description of your posture, not your impact. Shafts bend under load and the toe drops; the tape knows this and the showroom board does not.

Length is measured only after lie is settled, because moving one changes the other. We test in quarter-inch steps and watch strike location rather than distance. A shorter iron that finds the centre beats a longer one that finds the heel every time you are asked for a hundred and sixty yards over water.

The shaft in a five iron and the shaft in a pitching wedge should belong to the same family and step in an orderly way. We check frequency across the whole set on the meter and flag anything that sits out of sequence, which happens more often in replacement clubs and mixed sets.

Three Patterns That Turn Up Constantly
The Flat Middle
Six through eight measure flatter than the rest because they get hit the hardest and cleaned the least. Two degrees flat pushes a mid iron right for a right-handed golfer, and the golfer usually blames an outside path they do not have.
The Doubled Rung
A modern pitching wedge is frequently stronger than a gap wedge from a decade earlier. Sets assembled from different generations end up with two clubs carrying within six yards of each other and a thirty-yard hole underneath them.
The Heavy Long End
Stock sets often keep one shaft weight from top to bottom. Golfers who lose strike quality above the seven iron are frequently fighting mass they have no use for, and a lighter long-iron shaft ends the argument in one block of swings.

Ground here is not forgiving. Winter overseed sits soft on top of a firm base, dormant Bermuda in spring gives almost nothing, and the difference between the two changes how much sole a club needs to keep moving through impact.

Almost always, and it is the outcome we prefer. Cast heads bend within a sensible range and forged heads bend readily. We will tell you honestly if a head is at the limit of what its neck can take.
How often should the set be rechecked?
Once a season for anyone playing weekly, and once every two for occasional golfers. Drift is gradual, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed until the numbers are on paper.
Is a blended set a compromise?
Not if it is built deliberately. Plenty of good bags run a forgiving long end and a compact scoring end. The mistake is blending by accident and never checking that the join behaves.
Do I need a launch monitor session for irons at all?
You need one to map gaps. Lie and length can be settled with tape and a board, but carry intervals cannot be guessed reliably, and gapping is where most iron sets actually leak strokes.
