A Small Shop Built Around One Measurement
Two bays, one bench, and a stubborn refusal to sell a club before we can explain on paper why it will help.
Storage Unit, One Net, 2009
Face Angle Lab began in a climate-controlled storage unit off Palo Verde with a borrowed net, a loft and lie machine bought at auction, and a laptop running an early optical capture unit. The whole operation existed because of one frustration: golfers kept arriving at the range with expensive equipment and no idea whether any of it pointed where they were aiming.
For the first two seasons the work was almost entirely bending irons. Word travelled through a handful of municipal leagues, and by the time we moved to the Broadway suite in 2013 the second bay was already necessary. We added the putting surface in 2017 and the current capture hardware in 2022.
Seventeen years later the model has not really changed. We are still a shop that measures first, talks second, and sells third — sometimes not at all.
What the Studio Holds Today
- Two hitting bays, both with face-angle capture
- An indoor putting surface running at roughly eleven feet
- Loft and lie machine rated for forged and cast heads
- Frequency meter, gram scale, swingweight scale, spine finder
- Roughly 180 demo heads and 60 shaft options in rotation
- A parts wall that gets audited every February
Three Rules We Have Never Broken
One Change at a Time
If we adjust lie, length, and shaft together and the ball behaves better, we have learned nothing we can repeat. Isolating variables costs time and saves money.
The Sample Includes the Bad Ones
We do not discard your worst swings to make a spec look better. A build has to survive your whole distribution, not the top third of it.
No Recommendation Without a Reason
Every line on your spec sheet is tied to a measurement we can point at. If we cannot justify a change with data, we do not make it.
Nobody Pays Us to Prefer Them
We hold no exclusive agreements and carry no minimum-volume commitments with any manufacturer. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, because it changes what a recommendation means.
When a fitter has a quota, the honest ones fight it and the rest quietly steer. We removed the question entirely by never signing one.
Tucson Golf Has Its Own Physics
Playing at roughly two thousand four hundred feet in air that spends half the year very dry changes the numbers. Carry runs longer than sea-level charts suggest, spin sheds faster, and the ball releases hard on overseeded fairways in November and on dormant bermuda in February.
It also changes wear. Grips dry out and glaze here faster than almost anywhere, groove edges take a beating from decomposed granite, and a wedge that lived through one full summer of desert practice is not the wedge it was in October.
We fit for that. Gapping targets get set against local carry, not against a national average, and we will tell you when a club is worn past the point where a fitting can help it.

We Do Not Teach the Golf Swing
Plenty of face-angle problems have a coaching answer rather than an equipment answer. When that is the case we will say so and hand you back to your instructor with the data attached. We are not going to try to sell a lie change to fix a grip issue.
We Do Not Promise Distance
Some sessions add carry. Many do not, and a few take a little off in exchange for a much tighter dispersion pattern. If a number on a screen is the goal, there are shops that will chase it. We would rather tighten your spread.
