On a Four-Footer, Two Degrees Is a Miss
The shortest club in the bag is the one where face angle matters most, and it is the one almost nobody has ever had measured.
Everything Here Happens in Tenths
A driver forgives a degree. A putter does not. At four feet, a face pointing one degree off centre moves the ball roughly seven tenths of an inch by the time it reaches the hole, and the hole only offers you a couple of inches of margin once the ball is rolling at holing pace.
That arithmetic is why we treat the putter as a face-angle instrument rather than a feel object. The face contributes the overwhelming majority of a putt's start direction — considerably more than it does with a full swing, because the path is so shallow and the ball leaves so quickly.
None of which means feel is irrelevant. It means feel gets chosen from among the heads that already produce a square face, rather than the other way round. There is no version of this where a putter you love and cannot aim ends up in your bag with our blessing.

Aim Check Before a Ball Is Struck
You set up to a target and we read where the face is actually pointing at address, without you knowing the number. A large share of golfers aim their putter several degrees away from where they believe they are aiming, and every stroke after that is a compensation for a problem that happened before the club moved.

Hang Angle Off the Balance Rig
Your putter goes on a support and we read the angle the face settles at, in degrees. That single number replaces the whole vocabulary of face-balanced, quarter hang and full hang, which are categories broad enough to hide a fifteen-degree difference between two putters wearing the same label.

Sole Contact on the Strip
Tape on the sole, ten putts, and the wear pattern shows whether the club is sitting on its toe or its heel while you actually stroke it. A putter can rest perfectly flat on a bench and arrive two degrees toe-up in your hands, and only the tape will say so.

Face Numbers Under Load
Now we log face angle at impact, face relative to the intended line, and rotation through the strike, at four feet, eight feet and twenty. Short putts expose face error, long putts expose speed control, and the two blocks together tell you which of the two is costing you.

Length, Lie and Grip, Settled Last
Length is set from eye position over the ball rather than from a chart, lie is bent to match the contact tape, and grip size is chosen by how much it damps face rotation. All three change the face numbers, so they get confirmed with a final block before anything is written down.
Hang Angle Against How Much Your Face Rotates
The head wants to resist or assist the amount of rotation your stroke naturally produces. More rotation generally wants more hang; a stroke that barely rotates wants a head that stays square on its own.
Under Four Degrees of Rotation
Very little face turn between takeaway and impact. These strokes usually settle with a head that balances close to face-up, because a head that wants to rotate will be fought the whole way through. Larger mallets typically land here.
Four to Eight Degrees
The broad middle, and the range where most golfers actually live. Mid hang angles suit it, and this is the group where head shape and sight line preference can be given real weight because several options will measure equally well.
Above Eight Degrees
A rotating stroke that needs a head willing to turn with it. Strong hang angles keep the face moving in rhythm with the hands. Putting a face-balanced mallet in these hands produces pushes that get blamed on the read.
These brackets are a starting point for the first head we hand you, nothing more. The tape and the face numbers overrule them roughly one session in four.
Fitting for Greens That Change Twice a Year
Desert greens are quick in the spring and slower through overseeding, and the swing between the two is larger here than it is in most of the country. A putter head mass that feels right in April can feel dead in December on the same course.
We run the confirmation block at two different speeds on the strip for exactly that reason. Where the difference is uncomfortable, the answer is usually a small change in head mass or a counterweight under the grip rather than a different putter, and both are reversible in ten minutes on the bench.
We also record the length at which your eyes sat over the line, because that is the measurement golfers most often lose when they buy a replacement putter off a rack two years later.

Putter Questions From the Desk
I love my putter. Is a fitting going to take it away?
Very unlikely. Most putter sessions here end with the same head bent, cut and regripped. Attachment to a putter is worth protecting, and the geometry around the head is usually where the problem lives.
Is my stroke arc something I should be trying to change?
Not in this bay. We measure the stroke you own and match hardware to it. If we think a coach would help, we will say so plainly, but we do not give putting lessons dressed up as fittings.
Does putter loft matter?
It matters once shaft lean is accounted for. A stated three degrees can arrive at zero or at six depending on your hands, so we measure the loft you actually deliver rather than the number stamped on the sole.
Can I bring two putters?
Bring as many as you like. Comparing the numbers from putters you already own is frequently the fastest route to understanding what suits you, and it costs nothing extra.
