Closure Rate Through the Last Foot Before Contact
Averaging face rotation over an entire stroke smooths out precisely the section that decides where the ball starts. Look at the end of it instead.
Two golfers arrive with identical numbers on a summary screen. Both rotate the face nine degrees between the top of the backswing and impact. Both average the same closure rate over the stroke. On paper they are the same golfer, and any fitting logic driven by that summary would hand them the same club.
Look at how the rotation is distributed and they turn out to be nothing alike. The first golfer turns the face steadily throughout. The second holds it almost still for most of the way down and then releases six of those nine degrees in the final twelve inches. Their timing requirements are completely different, and so is the equipment that suits them.
Why the Last Foot Is the Part That Counts
Everything the face does earlier in the swing can be corrected. A face that is open at the top has time to catch up; a face that is closed halfway down has time to be held off. The golfer does not consciously do any of this, but the body has an enormous capacity to make late adjustments, and it uses it constantly.
What cannot be corrected is what happens in the last stretch, because there is no time left. Whatever rate the face is rotating at as it reaches the ball is the rate that sets the delivered angle, and any variation in timing across that short window shows up directly as start-line scatter.
This is why we quote closure rate as degrees per second measured over the final approach rather than as a total rotation figure. Total rotation tells you about style. The rate at the end tells you about tolerance — specifically, how much a few milliseconds of timing error costs.

Five milliseconds is not a lot to ask of anybody, and even at the bottom row the penalty per event is small. The trouble is that timing error is not a single event — it is a distribution, and a fast-closing face multiplies the whole distribution rather than shifting it.
What a High Closure Rate Asks For
Three levers move it, and all three are available on the bench.
Mass distribution in the head. Weight further from the shaft axis resists rotation. In a driver that means perimeter and rearward placement; in a putter it means a wider head and a higher moment of inertia. The head is not going to stop the golfer rotating it, but it slows the rate for the same effort.
Grip diameter. A thicker grip quietly damps face rotation because the hands have less leverage around the shaft. Adding two wraps of tape under the lead hand is one of the cheapest interventions we make and one of the most consistently effective for golfers whose face closes too quickly.
Shaft behaviour near the tip. A softer tip section allows the head to arrive with more of its own momentum behind the rotation. A stiffer tip holds it back. This is a real effect and a modest one, and it is the third lever we reach for rather than the first, because it is also the most expensive.
What It Does Not Ask For
It does not automatically call for a heavier shaft. Mass in the shaft changes tempo, which changes the whole sequence rather than the final foot specifically, and golfers who get handed a much heavier shaft to "slow the release down" often end up with a different problem instead of a solved one.
It also does not call for a closed or open face setting at address. That is a correction to the average, and closure rate is a property of the spread. Setting the face a degree closed on a golfer whose delivery varies by five degrees moves the whole distribution and improves nothing.
Measuring It Without a Lab
Honestly, you cannot, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. This is one of the few figures on our sheet that genuinely needs instrumentation, because the window is short and the resolution required is beyond what a phone camera gives you.
What you can do is notice the symptom. A golfer whose face closes quickly tends to have a miss that flips sides depending on the day rather than a consistent bias. If your bad rounds are left and your other bad rounds are right, and you cannot predict which you are getting, closure rate is a reasonable thing to have measured.
